The Department of Programmes and Ecumenical and Social Relations stands as a vital arm of the Church, entrusted with nurturing fellowship, advancing dialogue, and strengthening the bonds of unity across local and global Christian communities.
Leadership
The department is headed by a Director, appointed by the General Assembly Executive Council acting on behalf of the General Assembly, upon the recommendations of the Standing Committee and subject to the Assembly’s approval. Currently, this esteemed office is held by Rev. Emmanuel Elisha Attu, who carries the responsibility of guiding the department’s vision and mission with dedication and faithfulness. In the discharge of his duties, the Director reports to the General Assembly Executive Council through the Standing Committee.
Core Mandate
Advisory Role in Ecumenical Relations
Offering counsel to the General Assembly Executive Council on matters of policy affecting the Church’s relations with international ecumenical bodies. This includes maintaining strong ties with the World Council of Churches (WCC), the World Communion of Reformed Churches (WCRC), the All-African Conference of Churches (AACC), the Christian Council of Ghana, and other institutions, while reporting to the Church on issues of bilateral interest.
Strengthening Global Partnerships
Advising on relations with Churches abroad, recommending ecumenical co-workers for service, and ensuring their smooth integration into the life and mission of the Church
Evaluating Church Associations
Ensuring that issues raised by external auditors, internal reports, and other oversight bodies are addressed, with recommendations implemented by the relevant functionaries
Promoting Ecumenical Understanding
Encouraging dialogue and deeper understanding within the Church, while extending bridges of fellowship to Churches outside the Christian Council of Ghana
Programme Coordination
Overseeing the work of Programme Officers responsible for Children, Youth, Women, Men, the Aged, Christian Education, Worship, and other ministries, ensuring that each contributes meaningfully to the life and witness of the Church
Field Engagement
Visiting Presbyteries, Districts, and Congregations to promote the life and work of the Church, fostering unity and shared purpose across all levels
Additional Duties
Undertaking other responsibilities as may be assigned by the General Assembly Executive Council, reflecting the department’s flexibility and readiness to serve the evolving needs of the Church
