Abridged History
The Evangelical Presbyterian Church, Ghana (EPCG), traces its origins to the missionary enterprise of the North German Missionary Society (Bremen Mission), established on 9th April 1836. The Society's initial missionary activities focused on East India, with expeditions launched in 1843 and 1846.
In 1850, oversight of the East Indian mission was transferred to the Lutheran Church in America. The Society then turned its attention to West Africa, launching its third mission field in Gabon.
The Founding Journey
On 17th March 1847, four young missionaries departed Germany en route to Gabon: Lorenz Wolf (26), James Graft (32), Luer Bultman (28), and Karl Flato (25). However, on 5th May 1847, they landed instead in the Gold Coast.
With the support of Wesleyan Missionaries, they revised their plans, sending Wolf and Bultman ahead for reconnaissance. Tragically, Bultman passed away during the expedition, and Wolf was forced to return to the Gold Coast, where he learned of Flato's death as well.
Seeking new direction, Wolf consulted the Basel Missionaries at Christiansburg Castle, Osu. Upon their counsel, and through a providential invitation from Togbe Kwadzo Dei Tutu Yao II of Peki, delivered via his son Nyangamagu, Wolf arrived in Peki on 14th November 1847.
That historic day marked the birth of the EPCG. Wolf preached the inaugural sermon from Psalm 22:22, laying the spiritual foundation for the Church's enduring witness.
